Public awareness and perception of gastrointestinal health: A comparative study of rural and urban areas in Khordha District, Odisha

Author(s): Suchismita Patra and Padmalaya Jena

Abstract: Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are a significant public health concern in India, with varying levels of awareness and perception among different populations. These diseases affect millions of individuals, impacting their overall health, quality of life, and economic productivity. The disparities in awareness and healthcare-seeking behavior between rural and urban populations contribute to differences in disease prevalence and management. This study aims to compare the awareness and perception of gastrointestinal health between rural and urban populations in Khordha District, Odisha. Using a mixed-methods approach, including survey-based data collection and analysis of hospital records, the study investigates key factors influencing knowledge, preventive healthcare practices, and treatment accessibility. The results highlight stark differences in healthcare utilization, dietary habits, and preventive measures, with urban populations exhibiting higher awareness and better access to specialized medical care than their rural counterparts.Findings suggest that financial constraints, limited access to healthcare facilities, and lower literacy rates contribute to delayed diagnosis and treatment in rural areas. Additionally, urban populations have a higher prevalence of lifestyle-related GI diseases due to increased consumption of processed foods and sedentary habits. The study underscores the necessity for targeted health interventions, including public awareness campaigns, iamproved rural healthcare infrastructure, and education programs on GI health to bridge the knowledge gap. Implementing these measures can reduce the burden of gastrointestinal diseases and promote better health outcomes across all communities.
