Abstract:
The bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) has long been used as food and medicinal in many Asian nations. The Latin word Mordica, which means "to bite," is where the name "Momordica" originates. It describes the leaf's notched edges that seem to have been bitten. The plant, sometimes referred to as "bitter melon" or "bitter gourd," lives up to its nickname because everything about it, including the fruit, is extremely bitter. Because bitter gourd has a lot of proteins and phytochemicals, it provides several health benefits. Over 60 phytomedicines that are effective against over 30 ailments, including diabetes and cancer, are found in the entire plant. The use of the bioactive substances extracted from bitter gourd in functional foods and drinks is currently expanding. This review aims to provide light on the bitter gourd plant's nutritional characteristics, bioactive components and significant nutraceutical qualities.
